Ukrainians, Happy New Year Once Again!

Postby Lyudmila » Sat Jan 13, 2018 4:33 pm

Bea, did you know that tonight is another New Year's eve? It is all due to the Orthodox church's old calendar to which the church sticks since 1917 when the rest of the society started using the calendar used in the rest of the world.

In fact, nobody celebrates it the way people celebrate the New Year proper, but special carols are sung by carollers - this time mainly about a happy and rich year ahead and a good harvest. While Christmas carols are called "kolyadky", these are called "shchedrivky"- from the word meaning "rich, generous"- about the harvest and well-being.

The carol which was sung by Edmonton's male choir (I posted the link here) is actually a "shchedrivka", but is sung world-wide as a carrol.

Around 8 pm small groups of kids will start going from door to door singing "shchedrivkas", "sowing with " wheat grains and wishing good health, well-being and a rich harvest.
The funniest thing is that tomorrow is "Old New Year".
