How do you know winter has come?

Postby Lyudmila » Tue Dec 19, 2017 11:36 am

Apart from 1meter of snow within one night, and minus 2 outside, I can tell it is winter as my bird feeder on the balcony is a busy place now.

This year it is a large castle-like construction with a large entrance and no windows. I was afraid they would dread entering it. But fresh wallnuts and lard inside make them brave. I can stand for hours near the kitchen window watching them near the balcony feeder. They are so polite - no scandals, no rush, no being rude or impatient.

P.S. Had to edit the first line as according to meteorologists, Kiev had 1 metre of snow within 24 hours.

Winter begins December 21st.
Ours got a head start. We got our first snow mid November...we have had -30* Celsius a number of times...not counting the wind chill factor and we have had brutally cold winds. We have also had a couple of blizzards and white out conditions where one can barley see the road. Lastly and thankfully we have snow but only a few inches and not the meter = 39 inches of snow as they have had in Kiev...Our temperature today is - 20* Celsius with wind and is the forecast for the rest of the week and some blowing snow...not sure how much snow we will end up with.. ;;}(

Winter is truly here when I have to leave the central heat on and the outside temp. does not reach 50 F for a week. We had a chilly snap a few weeks ago, we've had some flurries here and there but the temps. have been reaching at least 50 F at least a couple of times a week. I haven't seen the weather for next week yet but Sunday and Monday will be in the 40's.

We've had more winter so far this season than the past 2 or 3 years! We blew right through a record low last night. The old low was -8 F (1945 and 1901) and we got down to -13 (with a wind chill of -35 F). We got colder than Minneapolis and the South Pole which were both at -10 F. Indy (about 100 miles south of us) got to -17 F last night and tied a record set back in 1887!

This is unreal. We haven't even been near the freezing point in 2 or 3 weeks and, because I wasn't feeling well last Thursday and Hubby did the grocery shopping, I haven't been farther than the mailbox in weeks! I'm getting a bit stir crazy!

We got all the way up to 4 F today (record low high) and at the 5 PM news, we were at 2 while Oklahoma City was all the way up to 19! This is very unusual just about anywhere in the US.

Last night the cold affected the cable and it was worse than the spring/fall solar events -- pixelated pictures, no pictures, no sound, a MESS! It was only 2 then. They fixed whatever froze, it appears.

Unfortunately, I don't stitch much in this weather. I get too antsy and just can't concentrate!
There's no such thing as a stupid question!
