What Do You Mean By "Doing Nothing"?

Postby Lyudmila » Fri Nov 17, 2017 10:49 am

We all have some kind of work, our hobbies, house work, etc. But what does our "doing nothing" mean? Is it just lying on a sofa reading or chatting with the neighbour next door or window shopping?

My "doing nothing" changes with years. I mean it is becoming more and more passive way of killing time. At the moment "doing nothing" usually means sitting and looking at cross stitch designs on the internet or reading forums or even (in summer) sitting on the balcony and watching and listening to the birds. Another option- a nap- this happens seldom, but after some really hard work I can fall asleep for an hour. And the laziest "doing nothing" is chatting on the phone with my school and class mate who lives in our native town, so updates local news for me.

What does your "doing nothing" consist of? :)]

for me it is wasting time on the computer OR getting sucked into binge watching something on Netflex (*)

Doing nothing for me is...not having to do...whatever. I seem to have to always be on call. Seems like I just get started on something I planned to do and need to go do something else. Doing nothing doesn't seem to happen to me. I seem to be busier now and always running out of time...so I guess I'm always busy. Gi{{

Sitting at the computer after I've finished with my e-mails and message boards and dither away the time uselessly playing games or something. It's either that or sitting watching TV without picking up my stitching.

Bea,
I am with you in that retirees have much less time than working mums and grannies. Plus everybody is afraid a pensioner may get bored, so try to find some work for you, right? Gi{{

True...but most of my issues are my dh...who is somewhat bored at times and he seems to have something for me to see or do, and that's usually right in the middle of when I have started or am trying to finish something so it seems like I'm kept on the go. I'm an early bird & night owl...he needs to sleep in ..so meals are not at the usual times which makes me crazy..because we eat at odd times and so I just am busy trying to do what I wont to do in between what's going on around me..... Doing nothing days for me are days on my own when I can jump from one thing to the other inside or outside.
When I dont have to watch the clock for meals or coffee times.
I enjoy just leaving 'stuff' around knowing it will will be there when I return to it Gi{{
I seem to get lots of small things done on these whole days....of course some time must be reading the posts on my boards.

Great question

To me - doing nothing is just relaxing on the recliner with the TV on (not paying that much attention to it) while I play with either a puzzle book or my fire (either reading or playing a game).

My time on the computer is "doing something" - playing with the computer. WH_:{

You would think I would have a lot of time to do nothing but I don't count stitching as nothing. When I'm at home, if I'm not cooking or cleaning I'm sitting on my bed so I can elevate my leg. I keep my current cross stitch and a knit or crochet project in a bin on my bed but sometimes I just stare at the TV and "veg out".
