I HATE Columbus Day!

Postby Dragonlair » Thu Oct 12, 2017 8:24 pm

Do you have a least favorite "holiday"? Is there just something about a holiday - like the season, the way it is celebrated or whatever?

It's hard to call Columbus Day a holiday unless you're a mail carrier, government worker, bank worker, or student but it is technically a holiday in the US.

I have nothing against Christopher Columbus but I'm not sure he really should have a holiday. After all, he didn't "discover" the new world. The Vikings were here in the north almost 500 years before Columbus. he didn't even actually find the continent but just found the islands and thought he found India.

No, my problem is the half-way method this holiday is handled and personal experience. 20 or more years ago, my hubby and I had a life-insurance policy with a company that we realized was getting very shaky! We took a "loan" out to try to get part of our money and then later would cash in the policy. Our timing was the worst! We got the check but because of the banks closed for Columbus Day, never got it deposited. We tried and it was returned. We then spent weeks with the company later trying to prove we never got the "loan"! Ever since that experience, I have hated this holiday.

It doesn't get any better! For some reason, this is just a very bad time of the year. This year, it's almost the end of the week (today) for the actual holiday but it was "celebrated" on Monday.

During this week, I've been frozen out of one company where I do surveys for the 2nd time in a month! It was less than a month ago that I got "un-frozen" with them. I'm in the process of even trying to find out what happened, much less get thawed out!

Also, I've found ebooks that didn't update and when I went into chat to get that fixed, I mentioned a long-standing bug with the Kindle software on the PC. Then I found out that I've been reporting the bug for over 5 years and it never got passed on to the developers. They never knew there WAS a bug. I spent an hour in chat on the issue including refusing "upgrades" to 2 versions of the software -- one was 2 levels back and the other is what I'm running now! That made me mad!

The support forum for the kindle/fire stuff on Amazon had changed to a "true" forum software and it's so buggy, it's not funny! This site is barely ready for "alpha" testing, much less "beta" testers. There are a dozen or so of us who have been finding bugs all over the place - and getting our posts tagged as "spam" for our efforts! That was another bug that they have supposedly fixed.

I had a bright idea on something for our house but that got shot down royally because we don't have a smartphone.

Is this week over yet? Soon???? Please?????

OK, I'm off my soap-box. WH_:{

Whew, I don't blame you for hating Columbus Day. As a Canadian, I can't understand why the U.S. celebrates Columbus, anyhow. There are a lot more history legends out there that could use a day named for them.

I don't like Valentine's Day. I guess because I was in a bad marriage from the start and never found anyone to get lovey dovey over after that. I can't see spending money on flowers that will die, chocolates that will get eaten, and ladies that get upset because their guy "forgot" it was Valentine's Day.

My daughter died on St. Patrick's Day, BTW, my ex-husband's (her father) last name was Finnegan.

I have an extra reason not to like Columbus Day this year -- do you realize what tomorrow is? It's Friday the 13th! I'm not normally superstitious but my sister had one of those really bad Friday the 13th and I always am cautious of them.

Hubby asked me if I wanted to skip shopping tomorrow because of the day and I said NO! Meijer has Mary Jane's (peanut butter kisses) on sale! I haven't even SEEN them in years and I've gotta get a couple of bags. They're not to be "wasted" on trick-or-treaters. I've already got that candy. I want it for ME!

Things are still happening! First time in months (this year, I think) - I have the problem that's common to women of all ages all over the world -- yeast! I can get what I need tomorrow but then have to wait until night to use it. 24 hours of discomfort. Yuck!

Can this week be over now?

Actually the week (work week anyway - Saturday doesn't really count) has ended up not so bad. Even if it is Friday the 13th!

Hubby decided not to try to "recycle" some stuff saved for emergencies with fresh stuff because of the day and because I'm not feeling 100%.

However, I did get my medication to use tonight. I'll be better tomorrow and probably feeling fine by Monday.

I also got my Mary Jane candies! I bought 2 bags ($2.50/bag). After freezing the pork chops (on sale) that I bought today, I settled down for an hour or so with a good book ("Cyador's Heir" by L. E. Modesitt, Jr.) and ate a few of them. My cat finally decided to quit hitting me in the head with her tail while sitting on the back of the chair and she took a nap on a rug on the floor.

I'm feeling much better. The book is ALMOST done -- only about a dozen more in this series. ;}}

Another year before another Columbus Day!

I absolutely hate Halloween and all the ugly stuff my neighbors decorate their lawns with - who needs a cemetary decorated with skulls across the street from your house. I can't wait for all that witchcraft stuff to be gone.
This year the Halloween stuff was actually sold in stores right from the start of the month -
and one more peeve, Christmas decorations went on sale a week ago...

:\| I also hate Halloween as it is becoming popular here. Some shopping centres even arrange "balls" on Halloween for kids to dance in those ugly costumes and dreadful make up. I cant understand how such a tradition could originate among normal people.
Anyway, there is another madness which came here from the West and as all "borrowings" is always overdone here. I mean St. Valentine's Day. Shops sell more on that day than on any other in the year, I am sure. And no one can explain the idea of that so-called holiday.

In Soviet times I hated the 7th and 8th November- anniversary of the Bolshevik takeover known as Great October Socialist Revolution. They were supposed to be days off work, but on the 7th at 11a.m. there was a demonstration (we had to be at school at 9) in which schools also participated, so a teacher could not relax untill the class returned back to school with all the slogans, flags and portraits of the leadership. On the 8th I usually had loads of house work.
But the worst thing about it was that ALL the shops in my tiny town were closed for those two days and you could not buy bread if you did not buy it in advance. With my forgetfulness I often had that problem.

I dont like New Year's eve for its noise till morning. In Western Ukraine from which I come, this holiday is not celebrated, people mainly observe Christmas. But here, in Kyiv, it is still very popular, so I always pray the neighbours from upstairs would go to celebrate at their relatives' in some village. And all the fireworks after midnight - a complete madness. Mind you, because of the war in the Donbas, fireworks are forbidden, but on New year's night no one cares.

What a long list I have made! But then I hate any parties. I am convinced holidays are for rest and quiet.
